Muslin is cotton woven in a loose, open weave, with small gaps between the threads rather than a tight, dense weft. Those gaps are what make the fabric breathable and quick-drying, and they also let the individual fibers move and relax more freely every time water and agitation hit them. Each wash loosens the weave a touch further, so the fabric feels a little softer than it did the wash before.
