A two-piece set gives you what a one-piece cannot: the ability to change half an outfit. When a top is wearable and the bottom is not, or the day cools and you want to keep the shorts and add a layer, separates save you a full change. Both pieces are cut in the same muslin, so they behave the same way in heat and after washing — a mismatched pair usually falls apart because one half shrinks differently.
The two halves are sized to the same age, but babies are rarely proportioned to a size chart. If your child is long in the body or wide at the hip, buy for the larger dimension and let the other piece sit loose — loose is the point. Because the pieces are sold together but wear independently, a set often outlasts its size as the top becomes a shorter top rather than becoming unwearable.
Wash both halves together on a cool gentle cycle so they age at the same rate. No fabric softener. If you line-dry, hang them by the shoulder and waistband rather than folding over the line, which sets a crease that takes an iron to remove.
