A terry hooded towel absorbs more water per gram, but it also takes hours to dry in humid air and starts to smell if it never fully does. Muslin takes a different approach: it absorbs less per pass but dries fast enough to be genuinely dry before the next bath. In a tropical climate that trade is usually worth making, and it is why a muslin towel is the one that travels well.
The hood is there to cover the head immediately after water, which is where a small child loses heat fastest and where the shivering starts. Wrap head first, then body. Sized to work from newborn through toddler by wrapping differently rather than by needing a second size — a bigger child simply uses more of the same square.
Wash cool, and definitely no fabric softener here: softener is what makes towels stop absorbing. Muslin towels are stiff on the first use and noticeably softer and more absorbent by the fifth wash, so judge one after a week rather than on day one.
