We're Vanessa and Bob, and we've watched both our kids take their first wobbly steps in muslin. It moves with them when they bend and reach, and flat seams mean no scratchy edges when they land on their bottom for the tenth time in an hour. Here's what we'd put on a toddler at this stage.
Loose through the leg so a new walker can bend and squat freely, with flat seams that stay comfortable through hours of practice steps.
One piece means no gap at the waist when they reach up or fall forward, and the open weave keeps them cool while they're on the move.
Built for moving between crawling and standing, with enough give in the fit for full squats.
A top and bottom pair you can mix for warmer or cooler days, useful since new walkers overheat quickly once they get going.
Muslin is lightweight and breathable, so it works best as an everyday layer. Add a jacket outdoors if it's cool; the loose weave alone isn't built for cold.
Wash cold on a gentle cycle and skip fabric softener; muslin softens on its own with every wash. Tumble dry low or hang instead of high heat.
