Pack two or three muslin onesie sets in your hospital bag: they're soft from the first wear since Epic pre-washes them, breathable thanks to the open weave, and quick-drying if there's a spit-up mishap. Choose a mix of sizes around newborn, since babies vary, and stick to flat-seamed styles that are gentle against new skin.

We're Vanessa and Bob, and packing for the hospital was one of the most overwhelming parts of getting ready for our own kids. Muslin onesie sets ended up being what we reached for most: light, breathable, and already soft since ours are pre-washed before they ship. Here's the short list of what we'd pack and why.
Our simplest onesie, easy to layer under a swaddle and soft against newborn skin from the first wear.
A top and bottom set gives a bit more coverage for visitors and photos without losing the breathability.
Same soft double-layer muslin with a little extra detail, nice for the going-home outfit.
Roomy and comfortable for nighttime in the hospital room, with easy access for diaper changes.
Two or three is usually enough for a short stay. Muslin dries quickly if you need to rinse one out, and you can always ask family to bring more from home.
Pack a newborn size and one size up. Our sizes run roughly newborn to 4 years, so there's room to size up if needed.
