A newborn's skin loses heat and moisture faster than an adult's, which is why a heavy jersey bodysuit turns clammy within an hour in the tropics. Muslin is a loose, open plain-weave cotton: the gaps between yarns let warm air escape instead of trapping it against the skin. That same open structure is what makes a fresh muslin onesie feel slightly crisp and a well-washed one feel like a worn-in bedsheet. If your baby runs hot at night or comes out of a nap with a damp back, the fabric is usually the variable worth changing first.
Our onesies are cut with room through the chest and hip rather than close to the body, because a snug bodysuit defeats the airflow you bought the muslin for. Sizing runs true to age, but if your baby is between sizes, size up: muslin relaxes slightly with washing and the extra room costs you nothing in heat. Full-length snap plackets matter more than they sound like they do, since they let you change a nappy without pulling anything over a sleeping head.
Wash cool on a gentle cycle and skip the fabric softener entirely, since softener coats cotton fibres and closes exactly the weave you want open. Muslin is one of the few fabrics that genuinely gets better with laundering as the weave relaxes and the hand softens, so the onesie in month six is more comfortable than the one you unwrapped. Line-dry in shade where you can; muslin dries fast enough that a tumble dryer is rarely worth the shrinkage risk.
