What Dads Pack for Bali Birth (And What the Hospital Covers)
Pack light, but not too light, see exactly what Bali hospitals provide for birth so you don't overpack (or underpack) your dad bag.

Dad's own hospital bag for a Bali birth should hold: a phone and long charger, cash plus a card for the admission deposit, copies of his ID and insurance, snacks and a water bottle, a change of clothes, and the baby's going-home outfit. That's the full list. Bali hospitals cover the medical care and ward basics. They do not cover your comfort, or the paperwork a cash-heavy system still runs on.
What a Bali hospital actually covers
Most private hospitals here run the same way. The hospital handles the room, the monitoring, the nursing care, and the basic supplies for mom and baby during the stay. That stretches to diapers and wipes while you're admitted, and often formula if the baby needs it. Meals are arranged for mom.
What it does not stretch to is you. Dads are rarely on the meal plan, the waiting areas are not built for long stays, and the AC in the room is often set colder than the air just outside the door. None of that is a complaint about the care, it's just a different system than a lot of families expect walking in.
A guarantee letter is a signed confirmation from your insurer that it will cover the hospital bill directly, so you skip the upfront deposit. Almost every hospital here asks for one of these, or cash, before anything else happens. If you've got international insurance, call ahead and get that letter sorted so it isn't the first fire you're putting out at 2am.
What dads should actually pack
Think of your bag as the thing that keeps you useful, not the thing that gets you comfortable. A long labour with no phone charger or a dad who has to leave to find food is not helping anyone.
- Phone and a long charger or power bank. Outlets are often behind the bed, not beside the chair.
- Cash in small bills, plus a card. The deposit desk moves faster with cash on hand.
- Copies of ID, insurance card, and the guarantee letter if you arranged one ahead of time.
- Snacks and a refillable water bottle. Hospital cafes keep limited hours.
- A change of clothes and a light layer. The car ride out is hot; the room AC runs cold.
- Toiletries and a toothbrush. Hospital stays run longer than you plan for.
- A downloaded show and headphones. Something to pass the time between checks.
- The baby's going-home outfit, sized small and loose enough that nobody's wrestling a newborn into something stiff on day one.
- The car seat, installed and ready well before the due date, not packed in a box in the garage.
- Key numbers saved in your phone: the ob/gyn, the hospital front desk, and whoever is on standby for other kids at home.
Documents to have ready
Keep a single folder, physical or on your phone, with ID copies, insurance details, and any birth plan your partner has put together. Bali admin runs on paper copies more than a lot of dads expect, and hunting for a scan at the front desk is not where you want to spend the first hour.
If you're far from family with no one who can swing by later, pack a little heavier than feels necessary the first time. We cover exactly that problem, no backup nearby, in Baby's 100 Days in Bali, No Family Around? Here's What to Bring.
Timing it around Bali traffic
Traffic changes the math on when to leave. A drive that is quick in the early morning can take much longer at rush hour. If you're still working out when contractions mean it's time to go, we cover that in How Far Apart Should Contractions Be to Leave for the Hospital in Bali?. Read it before the due date, not during.
FAQs
Does the hospital provide a going-home outfit for the baby?
Bali hospitals do not provide a going-home outfit. They supply what the baby needs during the stay, but the outfit for leaving is on the parents' packing list, not the hospital's.
How much cash should a dad bring for a Bali hospital stay?
Bring enough cash to cover the admission deposit if your insurance guarantee letter isn't sorted yet, plus a bit extra for parking, snacks, and anything the pharmacy downstairs sells that the ward doesn't stock. Deposit amounts vary by hospital and room class, so ask the admissions desk directly for the current figure.
Can dads stay overnight at Bali hospitals?
Whether dads can stay overnight depends on the hospital and the room type, and policies change over time. Call ahead and ask, so you're not working it out in the lobby at midnight.
A note from Bali
Packing that going-home bag ahead of time pays off. The thing that makes the first days easier is having something soft and loose already waiting, nothing to figure out at 2am. Muslin cotton is a loosely woven, breathable fabric. It handles Bali's heat and humidity better than tighter weaves, which many parents find more comfortable for everyday wear. For any diagnosed skin condition, follow your doctor or paediatrician. That's what we look for when we choose what to stock: pieces that are gentle on new skin and easy to get on a baby when you haven't slept. If that's useful while you're building your own list, have a look at what we carry.
