Sweaty, Awake at Midnight? Fix the Bath, Not the AC
Night sweats ruining your kid's sleep on a Bali trip? Skip the AC fight, one bath tweak before bed fixes overheating fast.

A warm bath can make your baby sweat and wake up instead of settling because Bali's bedrooms are often already close to body-warm, leaving little temperature drop for your baby to cool into afterward, the gap a bath relies on in cooler climates. Most parents reach for the AC remote first. The fix usually sits in the bath itself, not the thermostat.
Why a bath that works everywhere else can backfire here
Many parents notice a toddler's hair still damp late at night even with a fan and AC running. It's easy to assume the room is the problem. The air in a nursery here is doing a different job than the air in a nursery somewhere cooler. A bath that helps a baby wind down in a cold climate lands in a room that's already warm to begin with.
The temperature gap is smaller here
The temperature gap is the difference between the bathwater and the room that gives a baby somewhere to cool into afterward. In a cooler climate that gap is wide: the room is cooler than the water, so there's a noticeable shift after the bath. In Bali, the room and the bath are often closer in temperature than people expect, especially in the evening before the AC has pulled the heat out of the walls. That gap is what's missing. Check it before assuming the AC unit itself is underpowered.
Fix the bath, not the AC
Families who've been here a while tend to land on the same adjustment: move the bath earlier and make it cooler, rather than chasing a colder room.
A few shifts that tend to help
- Bath earlier in the evening, with a clear gap before the last feed and lights out, so there's time to settle instead of going to bed still flushed
- Lukewarm over hot, especially if you're adding boiled water to a bucket bath, since it's easy to run warmer than it feels at the tap
- Light, breathable sleepwear instead of anything fleece-lined or heavy, so the evening cooldown isn't fighting the fabric too
- Fan plus AC, not AC alone, since moving air does work a colder setting can't
- A spare set of light sleepwear kept nearby (not in the crib), for nights when a quick change helps more than anything else
Muslin is a loosely woven, lightweight cotton fabric that lets air pass through more easily than tighter weaves. That openness makes it one of the easier sleepwear swaps here: a midnight change doesn't mean wrestling a sweaty, heavy layer off a half-asleep toddler. If you haven't sorted sleepwear yet, what to wear a baby in Bali walks through the basics by season and age. And if 3am changes without fully waking your baby are the bigger nightly challenge, the jabla trick is worth reading alongside this one.
When it's not about the bath at all
If your baby only sweats through the night on bath evenings, the routine above is usually enough to test. If the sweating shows up regardless of whether there was a bath, especially after naps as well as overnight, it may be more about the room and the day's heat than the evening routine. We've written separately about why babies wake up sweaty and cranky after naps in Bali, which covers that angle.
And if the sweating seems out of step with everything else, more than you'd expect even accounting for the climate, or comes with anything that doesn't feel right to you, talk to your paediatrician rather than searching for an answer online.
FAQs
Should the bath happen earlier or later in the bedtime routine here? In Bali, moving the bath earlier works better for most families, with enough of a gap before the final feed and lights out that your baby isn't going into bed still flushed from the water.
Is a fan enough, or do we need the AC running too? In Bali, most households run both a fan and AC. The fan moves air around the room, which a fixed AC setting can't always do on its own, especially when there's one unit and awkward airflow.
Why does our baby still sweat on nights without a bath? Sweating on nights without a bath is usually a different issue, more about daytime heat and the room itself than the evening routine. Treat it separately rather than trying to fix it with the same bath adjustments.
A note from Bali
We hear this one a lot from other parents here: the AC's on, the fan's going, and the bath still seems to undo it all by midnight. It's rarely the room. It's usually the half hour before bed.
