Rain Hit During Pickup? Our Family's Wet-Season Plan
Caught in a surprise downpour at pickup? Here's our family's simple wet-season game plan to stay dry, calm, and on schedule in Bali.

If rain starts during preschool pickup in Bali, stop under secure shelter and contact the school. Ask staff to keep your child safely inside until you arrive. Do not rush through poor visibility or standing water. Carry dry clothes, a towel, and a waterproof bag for wet items.
Make the plan before the clouds gather
Wet-season pickup is easier when you do not rely on the forecast. Weather apps help, but tropical rain can develop quickly and arrive earlier than expected.
Ask about the preschool's rain procedure. Find out where children wait, how staff handle late pickup, and whether they prefer a message or call. Check that the school knows every adult allowed to collect your child.
If the route feels unsafe, stop somewhere sheltered and contact the school. Your child can wait with staff. Poor visibility and standing water are not worth a rushed journey.
If a nanny, grandparent, or friend shares pickup, give everyone the same plan. They should know whom to contact, where the spare clothes are, and what the school needs before releasing your child.
Keep a wet-season pickup pouch ready
A wet-season pickup pouch is a small bag containing everything your child needs after getting caught in the rain. Keep it inside the school bag or with the adult collecting your child.
Pack:
- A lightweight change of clothes
- Dry underwear or a nappy
- A small towel
- A waterproof bag for wet clothing
- A dry cloth for hands, feet, and faces
- Footwear suitable for puddles
- A small snack, if the school allows one
- The required pickup card or identification
The best spare outfit is easy to pull on in a cramped changing area when everyone is tired and damp.
Muslin is cotton woven with an open, loose structure that allows air to move through the fabric. It is lightweight, quick-drying, and useful for a change of clothes after a rainy pickup.
Epic's double-layer muslin cotton arrives pre-washed, with flat seams and no harsh finishes. It feels soft and allows easy movement. For more everyday bag ideas, see our guide to packing for daycare or playgroup in Bali.
What to do when rain begins at pickup
Contact the school before changing the plan
Send one clear message. Tell staff you are delayed, confirm who is collecting, and ask them to keep your child in the usual sheltered area.
Do not send several people to the school without telling staff. This can cause confusion at the gate when normal pickup moves indoors.
If another approved adult will collect your child, confirm it with the school. A clear handover is easier for staff and less surprising for your child.
Choose shelter over speed
Pickup guilt can arrive quickly. Your child is waiting, the rain is loud, and standing still feels wrong. That feeling is common.
Stopping under proper cover, choosing a safer route, or arriving later may be the safest choice. The aim is to reach your child without taking an avoidable risk.
Near the school, use the designated entrance. Do not cross a flooded verge or take a slippery shortcut. Follow staff directions around the gate and paths.
Reset before heading home
Once you are together, find shelter before opening bags or changing clothes. Remove wet clothing, dry your child, and place wet items in the waterproof bag. This keeps notebooks, snacks, and spare clothes dry.
Your child may love the rain or feel upset by the noise and delay. Use familiar words and take your time with the dry clothes. You do not need to rescue the original afternoon plan.
If the journey home still looks unsafe, wait somewhere secure. Once your child is with you, there is no need to leave immediately.
Once you are home
Empty the wet bag instead of leaving it zipped inside the school bag. Hang towels and clothes where air can reach them. If damp clothing is a regular problem, read our guide to keeping children's clothes from going musty during Bali's wet season.
Machine wash muslin clothing cold on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low or hang it to dry. Skip fabric softener and high heat. Muslin creases easily because of its loose weave, and those creases are normal.
Put the dry outfit back in the pouch straight away. Otherwise, the next rainy pickup may arrive while the spare clothes are still at home.
FAQs
Should I leave early whenever rain is forecast?
You do not always need to leave early when rain is forecast. Use the forecast as a reminder to check the pickup pouch and allow more time, but follow the school's rain procedure rather than trying to predict exactly when tropical rain will begin.
What if my child refuses to change wet clothes?
If your child refuses to change wet clothes, move somewhere sheltered and offer a simple choice between the dry items you packed. Give them a moment without rushing, as soft, lightweight clothing and a calm change can make the transition easier.
Should a spare outfit stay at school or travel with us?
A spare outfit can stay at school, travel in the pickup bag, or both, depending on the storage the school provides. The important part is keeping it labelled, dry, and easy to find when rain begins.
A note from Bali
We started Epic because our daughter was overheating in Bali's humidity and nothing on the shelf worked for her. On wet preschool afternoons, a plain plan helps: contact the school, wait under cover, and keep dry clothes in the bag.
Epic's double-layer muslin clothes are lightweight, breathable, and suited to easy movement in tropical weather. Muslin can feel gentle on sensitive skin, but this is about comfort, not treatment. For any diagnosed skin condition, follow your doctor or paediatrician's advice.
