What to Toss From the Villa Crib Before Nap One
Pre-check the villa crib before nap one: toxic foam, loose netting, drop-side rails, the 2-minute safety sweep every traveling parent should do first.

Before your baby’s first villa nap in Bali, remove pillows, loose blankets, toys, crib bumpers, sleep positioners, mosquito nets, and anything with a cord or tie. Use only a firm, flat, level mattress with a fitted sheet, and place your baby on their back in their own sleep space.
Start with an empty crib
An empty crib is a sleep space containing only a firm mattress and fitted sheet. Villa cribs may look welcoming while still holding items that should be removed before sleep.
A host may add a folded blanket, decorative cushion, stuffed toy or padded liner. Clear the crib before every nap and bedtime, then put back only the fitted sheet. Remove:
- Pillows and cushions
- Loose sheets, quilts and blankets
- Soft toys and comforters
- Crib bumpers and padded liners
- Sleep positioners, wedges and nests
- Portable bed rails that are not part of the crib
- Mosquito nets, canopies, ties and hanging fabric
- Monitor cables, blind cords and charger leads within reach
The first villa nap can feel rushed. Bags are half unpacked, everyone is hot and tired, and the decorated crib looks ready. Take one quiet minute to empty and inspect it before settling your baby.

Check the crib itself, not just what is inside
A suitable sleep surface is firm, flat and level, without a soft topper or loose covering. Once the extras are gone, inspect the crib in daylight and check that the fitted sheet stays around every corner without bunching or coming loose.
Look around the edges
Check for gaps around the mattress, exposed hardware, peeling material, broken slats or a base that moves when pressed. Confirm that the sides lock and the mattress support stays in place.
Do not fill gaps or steady the crib with towels, cushions or folded blankets. Ask the villa to replace a damaged or poorly fitted crib. Decorative bedding cannot fix a structural problem.
Look above and beside it
A clear crib area is free from cords, fabric and objects that could fall or be pulled into the sleep space. Move the crib away from blind cords, curtains, hanging decorations, lamps and charging cables.
Remove any mosquito net that could fall into the crib or come within your baby’s reach. Keep the crib away from a strong air-conditioning vent and curtains beside an open window. If the room temperature changes, adjust your baby’s clothing instead of adding loose bedding.
Lightweight clothing can keep the crib free from extra layers. Our guide to what to wear a baby in Bali covers practical clothing choices for warm, humid rooms.
Make the safe setup easy to repeat
A repeatable sleep check is a quick inspection before every nap and bedtime. Cleaners, relatives, babysitters or villa staff may return decorative items to the crib after the first nap.
Check the same things before every sleep: an empty crib, a firm and flat mattress, a secure fitted sheet and clear surroundings. Place your baby on their back for every sleep, including naps and nighttime. Follow current official safe-sleep guidance and ask your paediatrician when your baby’s needs change.
Tell anyone helping with sleep what must stay outside the crib. A direct request is enough: “Please leave the crib empty except for the fitted sheet.”
If the power fails or the room becomes warmer, check your baby and the sleep space before adding anything. Our Bali blackout bedtime plan explains what to check when a villa goes dark.
FAQs
Can I leave one small comfort toy in the villa crib?
No. Soft toys and other comfort objects should stay outside an infant’s sleep space. Use a familiar toy during the bedtime routine, then remove it before placing your baby in the crib. Ask your paediatrician if you need guidance for your baby’s age or development.
What if the villa provides a thick mattress topper?
Remove the thick topper and inspect the original mattress before your baby sleeps. The surface should be firm, flat, level and properly fitted to the crib. If it is damaged, soft or poorly fitted, ask the villa for a replacement rather than adding folded towels or blankets.
Is a mosquito net safe over a crib?
A mosquito net should not hang within reach or be able to fall into the crib. Because net designs and attachments vary, the cautious choice is to remove it from the sleep area. Ask your paediatrician about suitable mosquito precautions for your baby.
A note from Bali
It can be tempting to leave a beautifully arranged villa crib untouched when everyone needs a nap. Remove every extra item and check the mattress first. On warm Bali days, Epic clothes use pre-washed, double-layer muslin cotton. Muslin is cotton with an open, loose weave that allows air to move through the fabric and helps it dry quickly.
